Sarah Geronimo admits falling in love twice

MANILA -- Sarah Geronimo on Sunday opened up about her love life, even admitting that she fell in love twice. In an interview with Boy Abunda on "Buzz ng Bayan," the singer-actress talked about the lessons she learned from her past relationships. "Yung natutunan ko sa una? Natutunan ko 'yung acceptance. Siguro, we're not meant for each other. Siguro hindi pa lang ito 'yung panahon namin. Pero importante sa lahat na napagpatuloy 'yung friendship," she said, while declining to name the guy. Geronimo said her second attempt at love made her realize that she deserves someone better. But once again, she refused to identify the guy. "Natutunan ko, magmahal ka ng totoo, ng tama. Ngayon kung hindi niya suklian, ay, sorry. At least ako naging totoo ako sa 'yo, minahal kita ng totoo," she said. The singer also admitted that she was hurt more on the second time she fell in love. While Geronimo did not reveal who she was talking about, she did say that the public already know who they are. Geronimo had been romantically linked to actors Rayver Cruz and Gerald Anderson. When asked if she is currently in love, the singer just gave a vague answer. "Basta ako, hoping ako na tama 'yung ginagawa ko. Kung magkakamali man ako, ire-redirect ng Diyos ang path ko," she said. Geronimo is currently being linked to actor Matteo Guidicelli.

Matteo unsure if he'll watch Sarah's concert

MANILA – Matteo Guidicelli said he does not know yet if he will watch the 10th anniversary concert of Sarah Geronimo at the Araneta Coliseum on November 15. This comes after the Popstar Princess said she doesn't want anyone being linked to her to be part of the show, which will have a repeat on November 30 at Mall of Asia Arena. In her "24/SG" concert last year, actor Gerald Anderson, who was courting her at the time, played a part on the show. Speaking to ABS-CBN News on Tuesday, Guidicelli said he still has to check his schedule because he might have work commitments on that day. “I don’t know [if I will watch]. I don’t think so. I might have taping. I don’t know yet,” he briefly said. But the actor was quick to add that the concert will surely be a success because Geronimo always offers a great show. “It’s really, really nice. I remember watching her concert five years ago in Batangas and Cebu. And five years after, now it’s her 10th year, so congratulations. She’s amazing. The people love her. She’s very pure, she has a pure heart. She’s good at what she does. She has an amazing talent,” he said. Asked whether he is planning to give Geronimo something special, he said: “Iisipin ko pa iyan. Ano ba ang ibibigay ko?” Obviously trying to evade any more questions about his personal life, the “Galema” actor said he is just happy with how his life is going. “I’m very, very happy with everything. I’m very happy. With ‘Galema,’ it’s rating very well. My life right now, I’m very happy. It’s good,” he said. But some entertainment reporters continued to ask him about Geronimo, particularly on rumors about his parents liking the singer-actress. “I don’t know. I haven’t spoken to my mom yet. Hindi ko alam, sana. It’s nice to love everybody and to like everyone because everybody deserves to be appreciated and respected,” he said. According to Guidicelli, he has already met Geronimo’s parents when they had a series of shows abroad. “Magkasama kami sa America. They are cool, they’re just like any other family that just loves their daughter and loves their family very much. I guess all moms are strict. Even my mom is strict. Everybody wants the best for their kids,” he said. Rumors romantically linking the Kapamilya stars surfaced early this year when Guidicelli was reported to be the only showbiz personality seen at Geronimo's private birthday party in July, following his guest stint on her US concert series in the previous month. However, both stars have remained quiet about their closeness, with Geronimo saying, "This time gusto kong makita kung gaano kasinsero ang tao na 'yon o ako din."

Jed vs Sarah G with concerts on same day

MANILA -- Jed Madela's upcoming concert is scheduled on the same day as Sarah Geronimo's show, but the former sees nothing wrong with it. Madela will hold his 10th anniversary concert titled "X" on November 15 at the PICC Plenary Hall. On the same night, Geronimo will stage a 10th year concert billed as "Perfect 10" at the Araneta Coliseum. Reacting to this, Madela said: "Okay lang naman kasi sold out na. At first, siyempre, I was really surprised kasi what I knew all along na she will have her concert on November 22 or something. I said 'okay, November 15, okay na tayo doon.' Then to my surprise, biglang 15 na rin siya." "But you know, iba naman 'yung crowd ni Sarah at iba naman 'yung crowd ko. And Araneta is really far from PICC. At first, nakakatakot kasi siyempre Sarah Geronimo, Pop Princess. Pero as I said, it's a different crowd," he added. Madela said he is just happy to have survived 10 years in the local music industry. When asked if he considers his first decade as a professional singer "perfect," he said: "In my ten years, it’s not perfect, there has been highs and lows in the industry. Ang dami ring humindi sa akin, hindi tumanggap sa akin sa circle nila. On the other hand, what makes it perfect is learning from those things that I’ve experienced in the past. Looking back, it’s close to perfect." "I was lucky enough to be surrounded by a handful of people who believe so much in me na kahit sinasabi ko na I will give up, nandiyan sila to push me. They were my strength behind my temporary weakness," he added. Sexual preference Meanwhile, Madela faced the same issue regarding his sexual orientation. "'Yung mga ganyang issue, for anybody who steps into the world of showbiz, there are always questions about sexual preference, family background, 'yung upbringing. Lahat pakikialaman. And you can’t say one thing to put a period to it, kasi kahit anong sabihin mo, mayroon at mayroon pa rin silang sasabihin," he said. He said that with his ten years in the industry, he learned when to speak up or be silent about a certain issue. "I’ve learned from the past ten years in this business how to go with the flow and let everybody talk, let everybody speak their mind. Hindi ko na kokontrahin, kung anong gusto niyong sabihin, kung anong gusto niyong isipin, bahala na kayo. As long as I’m doing my job well, as long as I’m making people enjoy through my voice and performances, that’s what matters." While he is currently single, Madela said it doesn't mean that he has never entered into a relationship. "I make it a point to separate my private life from work. I really treasure my privacy. During the ten years, hindi naman ako naging single lang, I just managed to keep it private. Someone who can understand the business I am in. Hindi madali kasi 'yung sa schedule namin, hindi fixed. So, someone who understands my job, somebody who can make me laugh and somebody who can take care of me," he shared.

A slip? Sarah G refers to love life as 'OK so far'

MANILA -- Did Sarah Geronimo just confirm that there is more to the persistent rumors romantically linking her to actor Matteo Guidicelli? Speaking to reporters during a press conference for her 10th anniversary concert "Perfect 10," Geronimo once again asked about the "Galema" actor and, as expected, the singer-actress refused to give a direct answer. "Pasensiya na po ayaw ko po talagang pag-usapan, pasensiya na po," Geronimo said. "Babae din po ako." But as she explained her decision to keep mum, pointing out that she had been open about her personal life in the past, she also, perhaps inadvertently, admitted that there may some truth to these rumors. "Sana ay naintindihan niyo na this time gusto kong gawing private at ayaw kong haluan ng showbiz kung sino man 'yung taong napapalapit sa puso ko kasi nandoon na ang takot ko," she said, careful not to mention any names. "This time gusto kong makita kung gaano kasinsero ang tao na 'yon o ako din," she added. As the reporters continued to badger her about her love life, Geronimo said she would now like to keep her personal life private. "Ayaw kong matulad sa iba na lahat may say, lahat alam pero di nila alam kung ano ang nangyari," she said. "So sana kung ano man ang mayroon kami ay sa amin na lang dalawa or sa mga taong malalapit sa amin ...para tahimik lang din po. "Lalabas at lalabas din 'yung totoo. Hindi naman namin kailangang 'I'm so in love,' hindi naman kailangang ganoon," she said. Geronimo went on to admit that she's happy with her life right now. "Masaya po, masaya ako ngayon," she said. "Kailangan po (ng inspiration) para patuloy kang mabuhay at nandoon 'yung fire mo na pagbutihan pa at sipagan ang buhay mo. So importante na kahit walang love life ay inspired ka," she said. Asked again if she has a love life or not, Geronimo replied: "Basta okay naman, okay po so far. Sana ay maging okay siya." Surprise guest Unlike in her previous concert, Geronimo said she doesn't want anyone being linked to her to be part of the show, which will be held on November 15 at Araneta Coliseum and on November 30 at Mall of Asia Arena. In her "24/SG" concert last year, actor Gerald Anderson, who was courting her at the time, played a part on the show. "Ayaw na ayaw ko na pong dumepende sa lalaki. Ang ibig kong sabihin kasi 'yung production ginawa dahil mayroong, alam niyo na yon," she said. "Sabi ko, this time, ayaw kong may mahalong ganoon. Gusto ko ako lang talaga dahil concert ko ito at 'yung talent ko ang shino-showcase dito hindi ang love life ko or kung sino man ang nali-link sa akin."

Matteo speaks up on rumors about Sarah

MANILA – Actor Matteo Guidicelli has set the record straight that there is really nothing romantic going on between him and singer-actress Sarah Geronimo. Rumors linking the two Kapamilya stars began when Guidicelli and Geronimo had a series of shows in the United States in June. In an interview with ABS-CBN News at the sidelines of the pictorial for his upcoming series “Galema,” Guidicelli shrugged off rumors that he and Geronimo are already a couple. “Wala talaga. We are just friends. I’m going to say that again, we are just friends,” he said. Guidicelli also commented on a photo circulating where he is seen with a group of people supposedly at Geronimo’s house. “We are just friends. It was her birthday so I passed by. We celebrated her birthday,” he said. In two separate interviews, both actress Jessy Mendiola and actor Gerald Anderson said they have no problems if it is true that Guidicelli and Geronimo are dating. Mendiola also said she is happy for Guidicelli because Geronimo has been the actor’s long-time crush. Mendiola was Guidicelli’s former special someone, while Anderson courted Geronimo for a while in the past. Asked whether his crush on Geronimo was developed further after the US tour, Guidicelli said: “Wala, [walang rekindling talaga]. We are just friends. I don’t want to drag her into anything else.” Guidicelli said he’d rather concentrate on his upcoming soap with “Agua Bendita” co-star Andi Eigenmann. “After fuve years, kami na naman ang magkasama. Andi and I, we’ve changed a lot, we’ve matured a lot as people, as actors. It’s very different this time around but siyempre 'yung ugali namin is still the same,” he said. Guidicelli said he is looking forward to taping “Galema” because the story is totally different from “Agua Bendita” where he and Eigenmann fist worked together. “Yung mga characters namin, sobrang iba dito. Si Andi may dalawang ahas, ako naman sundalo. 'Yung character ko dito is a tough guy, ibang level,” he said.

Voice PH: Meet Team Sarah's Popsters

MANILA -- As the country's "Pop Star Princess," Sarah Geronimo has earned a massive and passionate following. Understandably, a number of them were overcome with joy to a land a spot in the actress-singer's team on "The Voice of the Philippines." Throughout the Blind Auditions of the hit reality talent search, the 25-year-old Geronimo came face-to-face with several "The Voice" hopefuls, who have the common denominator of being her avid fans. While some auditioning artists were admittedly decided in advance to pick her fellow coaches over her, Geronimo managed to "charm" them to play for Team Sarah. Here are the 13 artists representing Geronimo in the Battle Rounds of "The Voice of the Philippines." Self-confessed Popsters, (1) Michaellen Temporada and (2) Morisette Amon, were among the first recruits of the pop star coach. The former is a 24-year-old registered nurse from Zamboanga del Sur, while the latter is a 16-year-old student and theater actress from Quezon City. Four-chair turner (3) Klarisse de Guzman, who competed with Geronimo in a 2002 singing competition, picked her former rival as coach to "spend time with her again." Also on Team Sarah are (4) Junji Aras, a 36-year-old music producer from Makati City; (5) Eva delos Santos, a 51-year-old housewife from Cebu City; and (6) Hans Dimayuga, a 24-year-old freelance signer from Paranaque. Davao-born architecture student (7) Kat Castro, 21, also impressed Geronimo to get a slot in her team, as did Laguna-based theater actor (8) Gab Ramos, 21. Geronimo was also happy to recruit (9) Yuki Ito, 22, a self-proclaimed "beauty queen in the making" from Bulacan; and (10) Lecelle Trinidad, 17, an engineering student from Nueva Ecjia. Completing the pop star's 13-member team are Manila's (11) Maki Ricafort, the 35-year-old former South Border guitarist; Quezon's (12) Dave Lamar, a 22-year-old Fil-American singer; and Bulacan's (13) Roxette Swinton, a 16-year-old student from Bulacan. Starting Sunday, July 28, Geronimo is bringing her squad of singing Popsters to the Battle Rounds of "The Voice of the Philippines." Two to three artists from the same team will be pitted against each other by their coach to trim down the number of members by half. The artist in each pairing or grouping who will best impress Geronimo will move on to the Live Shows.

Matteo Guidicelli clears up rumored romance with Sarah Geronimo

People have been speculating about Matteo Guidicelli and Sarah Geronimo ever since they developed an onstage chemistry during their recent concert tour in the US. “We just had good shows in America. It’s a great experience performing with the Popstar Princess. I admire everything about her. She’s a wonderful person. I appreciate that people appreciate what I did in the States. I’m very blessed to have worked with them,” he said in an interview with Push.com.ph. When reminded of the fact that he used to have a huge crush on Sarah and even watched one of her shows in the past, Matteo replied with a laugh. “Five years ago pa ‘yan.” In any case, he said he’s open to doing a TV soap with Sarah if given the chance. “Hindi ko alam, wala naman plans. Pero hopefully magkaroon. Depende what they will give us. Any work is a great opportunity. We’ll see.” As for his misunderstanding with Jessy Mendiola, Matteo explained that he didn’t mean to hurt anyone because of his determination to stay focused on his personal interests. “Siyempre I don’t want to hurt anybody. Everything that people do in life is a learning experience. Everything you go through makes you a better person. It’s a matter of prioritizing things. They happen all the time. But you just learn from them and sana the next time, it won’t happen again. There’s room to be a better person.” As far as the public knows, Matteo never made a commitment with Jessy to begin with. But the actor/triathlete insisted that he doesn’t have any bad blood with his former Paraiso co-star. “We don’t have anything na masama together. We’re still friends. We work together for [an endorsement]. As long as she’s happy with what she does, I wish her the best. I know she’s a wonderful person. She’s a strong person.” Asked if he’s holding back out of his fear of falling in love, Matteo answered, “Hindi naman ako takot [ma in love]. Marami lang ako priorities—yung soap, TV show, Ironman—they take so much time. Everyday nagigising ako 5 a.m., natutulog ako ng maaga. It’s all about knowing your priority and what’s best for you.” He added that making a commitment is not something that needs to be rushed. “It’s not that there’s no time for love. I am just not looking for it. Hopefully, one day it will come. God will give it to us. You don’t have to look for it. It will come, someday.”

Sarah, Apl in all-out clash over 'Voice PH' 4-chair turner Klarisse

Pop star claims 'destiny' in recruiting former rival MANILA -- In a show-stopping clash on "The Voice of the Philippines" in its episode aired Saturday, coaches Sarah Geronimo and Allan "apl.de.ap" Pineda made desperate pleas to convince four-chair turner Klarisse de Guzman to join their respective teams. Impressing all four coaches with her rendition of the OPM hit "Tulak ng Bibig, Kabig ng Dibdib," the 21-year-old de Guzman came face-to-face with her former rival on a singing contest. Geronimo and de Guzman were competitors in the 2002 TV program "Star for a Night," which the Kapamilya star won to claim the title "Pop Star Princess." A visibly shocked Geronimo rushed to the stage to hug de Guzman, whom she had known as "Klang," when the auditionee related her history with the coach. Claiming advantage of her connection with the artist, Geronimo brought up their being former co-finalists in attempting to recruit de Guzman. Interrupting Geronimo, coach Bamboo Manalac called out the pop star for "cheating," to which the latter quipped, "Let me finish first!" Conceding she isn't the best fit as coach for de Guzman, Lea Salonga drew laughs when she sat by the stage facing her fellow coaches, saying she would have more fun watching them fight over the artist. 'Connections' Blocking interruptions from her fellow coaches, Geronimo stood up to make her case, telling de Guzman, "Klarisse, I think it's destiny. Nauna ako dito para dalhin ka naman sa panahon mo, at ito ang panahon mo. Hayaan mo 'kong tulungan kita!" The pop star then brought up her "connections" as she dialed a number on her phone, with veteran singer Martin Nievera answering at the other end. A member of the Grammy-winning group The Black Eyed Peas, Pineda pulled out the same card as he tried reaching his close friend, American music producer William "will.i.am" Adams. What followed was a moment of humiliation for Pineda, who was met with a voice mail prompt on the line, as Nievera sang praises for Geronimo's world-class talent. Despite what appeared to be hard-fought battle among the coaches, de Guzman did not take time in deciding who to pick as her mentor. "Pipiliin ko 'tong coach na 'to kasi alam kong matutulungan niya talaga ako, and gusto ko ulit siya makasama," de Guzman said, prompting an ecstatic response from Geronimo. Worldwide trending As in previous weeks, the auditions seen during Saturday's episode of "The Voice of the Philippines" dominated conversations on micro-blogging site Twitter. The official hashtag of the program, "#VoicePH," even claimed the second spot in the worldwide trending topics at its peak. Now down to its last two Blind Auditions episodes, "The Voice of the Philippines" is nearing the completion of the four coaches' teams. As of the talent search's July 20 telecast, Salonga has already filled up the 12 slots on her team, with Manalac, Geronimo and Pineda still searching for one more artist each to complete their respective teams. The program is set to kick off its Battle Rounds starting July 28.

Angeline hopes to collaborate with Sarah G

MANILA, Philippines -- Singer Angeline Quinto wants to have "The Voice of the Philippines" coach Sarah Geronimo as a guest artist in her upcoming album. Quinto said this collaboration would also prove that there's really no competition between the two powerful singers. "Para sa akin po tapos naman na 'yon. Feeling ko ang ibang tao ay pagod na din sa isyu na pinagko-compete kami ni Sarah. Para po matapos na din at least maintindihan ng tao na magkaibigan talaga kami ni Ms. Sarah," Quinto said. The singer said she's excited to work on her latest album, which will be her third. Quinto released her self-titled debut album in 2011, which was followed up last year with "Fall in Love Again." Both albums were certified platinum. The "Star Power" winner explained that she wants to focus again on music after dabbling in acting. Last year, Quinto made her movie debut in "Born to Love You," and early this year headlined her own TV series, "Kahit Konting Pagtingin." "Sa totoo, sobrang excited ako kasi medyo matagal 'yung pahinga ko sa paggawa nga ng album ulit," she said. "Sa ngayon ay gusto ko pong mag-focus muna sa pagkanta. Sabi ko nga ay ito 'yung right time ulit na makagawa kami ng pangatlong album sa Star Records ulit." Quinto said her new album will be far different from her previous CD. "Kasi ang first at second album ko halos ballad lahat ang laman noon. So ngayon gusto ko din po na may maiba. Ako aminado ako na medyo mahina ako sa fast songs so feeling ko ito 'yung time na kailangang harapin ko 'yon, aralin kung ano ang kahinaan ko. So feeling ito 'yung panibagong Angeline na makikita ng tao pagdating sa music," she said. Included in her album are two revivals and a song she herself composed.

Sarah G, Lea address brewing 'feud'

MANILA, Philippines -- "The Voice of the Philippines" coaches Sarah Geronimo and Lea Salonga denied that their rivalry on the hit reality talent search has spilled over off-camera. "Wala naman 'yun. Part 'yun ng pagiging sport ng show, 'yung fun, 'di ba," the 24-year-old Geronimo said in an interview on "Showbiz Inside Report" aired Saturday. "Ganun talaga. Iyon 'yung reality ng 'The Voice of the Philippines.' Meron talagang hindi napipili na coach, 'yung pwedeng sumama ng loob," she added, laughing. Geronimo is referring to the format of the program, as seen in over 50 countries, wherein four coaches form teams of 12 members by screening artists through the Blind Auditions. With their backs turned to the auditionees, the coaches only rely on the voice as the determining factor as to whether they will turn their chairs around to recruit the artist. In the event that more than two or more coaches choose a particular artist, the coaches will have to convince the artist to pick them. "Syempre mahirap, kailangan pabulaklakan ng words, labasan ng credentials, 'di ba," Geronimo said. "Gagawin mo lahat tapos sasabihin mo na lahat para lang makuha siya." Clash In several instances during the Blind Auditions -- which will air for five more episodes until July 27 -- Geronimo and Salonga came head to head in convincing one contestant to join their respective teams. During the audition of ex-Kulay member Radha Tinsay aired on June 22, Salonga, in convincing the artist to join her team over Geronimo's, remarked that unlike the young singer, she "doesn't have to sell herself too much." "I'm glad that my chair was the first one to turn for you, let me say that right now. You already know what I can do as a coach, 'yun nalang sasabihin ko," Salonga told Tinsay. "I don't have to sell myself too much," the 42-year-old singer added, before turning to Geronimo to say, "You, however..." In a separate interview on "Showbiz Inside Report," Salonga clarified that any such comments they make on the show are all made in jest, and that they remain professional about it. "Ay, hindi. We don't take it seriously. Hindi kami nagkakainitan. This is my thing, this is a personal thing. I tease people I like, and the more I like them, the hotter it gets," she said. The Tony award winner also teased that Geronimo has yet to show her "full arsenal" on the program as a coach. "Si Sarah, may armas pa 'yan na hindi naaano... Matteo speaks up on Sarah G

MANILA, Philippines -- Actor Matteo Guidicelli insists he is just friends with singer-actress Sarah Geronimo amid rumors romantically linking the two Kapamilya stars. "We are friends, that's it," Guidicelli told reporters during the launching of his newest endorsement LINE with Jessy Mendiola, with whom he had a "special relationship." Guidicelli also denied that he courted the singer and stressed that he has no plan to pursue her. "We are just friends po," the actor said. Asked if he still has a crush on Geronimo, the actor again repeated the line: "Wala po. We are just friends." Aside from co-hosting "Sarah G Live," Guidicelli was also part of Geronimo's concert abroad. Last week, Guidicelli's former leading lady Mendiola stressed that Geronimo had nothing to do with their alleged "break-up." "Nahihiya nga ako kay Sarah kasi palagi na lang siya ang nadadawit sa pangyayaring ito. May nagti-tweet sa akin nagagalit. Hindi po siya kasali. Siguro nagkataon nagkaroon sila ng show in the States and wala, ayaw ko siyang isama sa nangyayari kasi hindi naman po talaga," Mendiola said at the time.

Charice wants to record duet with Sarah G

MANILA – Following her admission that she has a crush on Sarah Geronimo, singer Charice now expressed her desire to collaborate with the country's Pop star Princess. In an interview with ABS-CBN News, Charice said it would be an honor if she and Geronimo could record a duet. “Although we did a duet na po for how many times, it would be nice to have a collaboration with Ms. Sarah Geronimo. Since napakalaki niyang inspirasyon sa mga kabataan, sa mga tao, and since napakabait niyang tao, it would be an honor to collaborate with her,” she said. Charice started his showbiz stint after she joined the talent competition “Little Big Star” in 2005, which was then hosted by Geronimo. Currently working on her third local album, Charice said she is excited for her supporters to hear her new music because the songs represent the new her. Charice came out as a lesbian on national television early last month. “I’m excited kasi nung first day nga na nag-record ako, sabi ko sa sarili ko finally makakanta ko na 'yung mga songs na gusto ko. Itong album na ito, 'yung mga songs na paborito ko na may koneksyon din sa life ko. Not only sa buhay ko, pati na rin sa lahat ng mga tao. Very masa. I’m very excited,” she said. Charice said the album titled “Chapter 10” will be released in the Philippines in September. Meanwhile, the former “Glee” star revealed that she will soon be flying to the United States for other commitments. “Talagang sobrang parang sinasagad na 'yung schedule sa Philippines so lahat ng shows pinagbibigyan. Pero very soon, babalik ako sa States para mag-attend ng events and to do photo shoots since when I came out, it was a huge news din po sa US. Very excited din po,” she said. Charice said she is looking forward to visit the US again because it has been a while since she went there. “I’ll be in the States for how many weeks but I will also be back in the Philippines to release the album. Excited ako bumalik sa States kasi medyo matagal ko nang hindi nakakasama and nakikita ang mga fans ko doon. Since I came out, medyo marami na rin akong napakita sa mga fans ko dito so parang it’s their turn naman,” she said. Before returning to the Philippines in time for her album release, Charice said she will also stop by Germany to meet some of her fans there. “Before I fly back here, pupunta din muna ako sa Germany for a private event. It will be my first time to go there so siguro magkakaroon din ako ng meet and greet para sa mga fans po doon,” she said.

Sarah G beats Lea for Japanese-Filipino singer

MANILA, Philippines – It was Team Sarah’s turn on Sunday to set social media on fire after the youngest judge of “The Voice of the Philippines” landed the evening’s most talked-about contestant. Hidoyuki Ito, the son of a Japanese father and a Filipino mother, took the stage with James Brown’s “It's A Man's Man's Man's World,” and got the two female coaches Sarah Geronimo and Lea Salonga to turn their chairs with his soulful performance. “Sobra mo ako na-capture …naramdaman ko ‘yung intensity at sincerity, kuha mo ‘ko,” Geronimo told Ito, who was born in Japan but grew up in the Philippines. “Kahit boses pa lang, ulam na. I want you on my team,” Salonga said. But it’s not just Ito’s voice that grabbed the viewers’ attention. Ito, who is openly gay, said he once lost his voice and struggled with depression, which led him to try illegal drugs. “Bakla ka na nga, may bisyo ka pa,” he said, adding that he locked himself in a room to get rid of his addictions. Ito told the judges that he also regularly joins gay beauty contests. “But this is ‘The Voice.’ It’s not about my gender preference; it’s all about my voice,” he said. Asked to choose between Geronimo and Salonga, Ito admitted that he idolized Salonga before saying, “I’m sorry but I’ll choose Sarah.” After Sunday’s episode, Team Sarah now has eight contestants, after she also picked 20-year-old student Kathreen Castro from Davao. Black Eyed Peas member apl.de.ap also landed two contestants on Sunday – 28-year-old musician Lance Fabros and 19-year-old wedding singer Tristhan Perfecto – bringing his total to eight. Rocker Bamboo Manalac leads all the coaches with nine contestants on his team, after he selected call center agent Nicole Parada in Sunday’s episode. Salonga, meanwhile, has seven contestants.

Apl.de.ap calls Sarah G 'sneaky'

The Black Eyed Peas member continues charity work MANILA, Philippines -- Among his fellow coaches on "The Voice of the Philippines," Allan "apl.de.ap" Pineda of The Black Eyed Peas finds the youngest one, Sarah Geronimo, particularly "sneaky." The 38-year-old rapper said he did not expect the 24-year-old singer to possess certain qualities she's become known for on the hit reality talent search so far. "She's the sneaky one, because she's well spoken, very nice and she relates to the people, and I like that. It's just great," Pineda told reporters at the sidelines of a press conference held Thursday announcing his partnership with fast-food chain Red Ribbon. Airing Saturdays at 8:15 p.m. and Sundays at 9:00 p.m., "The Voice of the Philippines" is approaching its fourth week screening hopefuls through the Blind Auditions. Aside from Pineda and Geronimo, sitting as coaches are Tony award-winner Lea Salonga and Pinoy rock icon Bamboo Manalac. Asked which among his fellow coaches he is closest to, the Filipino-American rapper said, "I would say Lea, because we have that friendly competition and I love it." Pineda is also impressed with the recruits of Manalac so far, saying, in jest, "Baka may mata sa likod si Bamboo, kasi ang mga pinipili niya anggaganda!" For his part, Pineda said he is particularly proud of the aspect of the show that promotes Filipino talent to a wide audience. "It's great. So many talented Pinoys, and it's so hard, because my team, they're all amazing. And now that I have to pair them up and kind of... not lose them, but it's a competition," he said. Pineda is referring to the Battle Rounds phase of the program, wherein artists from the same team are pitted against each other to trim down the number of members per group. Team Apl so far has six artists: freelance writer Cara Manglapus, college student Moi dela Torre, band vocalist Sir Lord Lumibao, singing siblings Grace and Guji Lorenzana, sidewalk vendor Cora dela Cruz, and back-up vocalist Thor Dulay. Advocacy As a coach forming a team and honing talents on "The Voice of the Philippines," Pineda said his job on the ABS-CBN program is similar to his advocacy as a Philippines-born performer who made it big internationally. "I grew up in Sapang Bato, Angeles, Pampanga, and I was given an opportunity, and that's why it's really important for me to do the same, to give that same blessing. "I was lucky enough to be given that opportunity, and now it's time for me to give back. And I'm proud of my kababayans, and I want to see the youth of the Philippines to compete against the world," he said. Through the Apl.de.Ap Foundation, Pineda helps poor communities in the Philippines and in parts of Asia by building classrooms and addressing other educational needs. With the continued growth of the foundation, Pineda said a new goal is to hone the musical talents of poor Filipinos, through formal education, to help them find opportunities. "In every classroom, there's going to be a music program. And we're going to provide the same equipment that I use in my daily life, in making music. So definitely I'm sharing my experience with them," he said. Pointing to education as "the key out of poverty," Pineda continued, "With education, you can be anything. It comes from experience with me having an education that led me to be here, giving back and helping out others."
