Vilma still waiting for script for film with Nora

MANILA – Veteran actress Vilma Santos insisted that she is open to working with rival Nora Aunor in a movie and is just waiting for the script for the proposed project. “Kung mabibigyan kami ng magandang script, I don’t think magiging problema yun,” she told entertainment website Pep.ph in an interview. There have been reports that director Brillante Mendoza, who made "Thy Womb" with Aunor, wants to do a movie with the two award-winning actresses along with actor Coco Martin. Santos said she heard about the project but is still waiting to read the script. “Pinuntahan ako ni Direk Brillante (Mendoza), binanggit niya sa akin iyan. But the thing is isa lang naman ang sinabi ko, ‘Direk, walang problema. Pero I need the script.' Pero hanggang ngayon, wala namang script,” she said. Santos said if they are going to work together again, one of their requirements would be a good script. “Sa edad namin ngayon, we’re not getting any younger, we need a good script. Sa tinagal-tagal namin sa industriya, palagay ko hindi naman dapat mapahiya pa kaming dalawa,” she said. Santos, who has been dubbed "Star for All Seasons," said it would be an honor for her to work with Aunor again since they have already starred in several movies together in the past. “Hindi naman kami first time magsama ni kumare ko, ni Ate Guy. Nakaapat na yata kaming pelikula together since we were younger. Ang huli namin yata ay yung T-Bird At Ako [1982]. So hindi imposible,” she said. Meanwhile, the Batangas governor appealed to fans to spare her and Aunor from intrigues, comparing her first independent film “Ekstra” with Aunor’s “Thy Womb.” “Huwag na nating gawan ng isyu. Huwag n’yo na kaming intrigahin ni Nora. Ang mahalaga ay kung ano ang magagawa namin para sa ikauunlad ng indie,” she said. Santos revealed she even hesitated to deliver a line in her movie where she mentioned Aunor’s name because fans might put malice to it. “Sinabi ko nga kay Direk [Jeffrey Jeturian], ‘Direk, iintrigahin n’yo kami.’ Ang sabi ni Direk, ‘Hindi, nasa script iyan.’ Sabi ni Direk, ‘Sagot kita,’” she said. According to Santos, she just wants to promote the Filipino movie industry and competing against Aunor is not among her concerns.

Vilma personally asked for 'Sir Chief' in 'Ekstra'

MANILA, Philippines -- Batangas Governor and Star for All Seasons Vilma Santos revealed that it was her personal choice to get Kapamilya star Richard Yap to be part of her first indie movie, "Ekstra." During a press conference of "Ekstra" on Thursday, Santos said she requested to have Yap in the film because she's a big fan of the ABS-CBN hit daytime series "Be Careful With My Heart." "Si Papa Chen, special request po 'yon. Si Papa Chen special request ko kay direk ...ah si Sir Chief na siya ngayon," Santos said, using the names of Yap's characters in "My Binondo Girl" and "Be Careful With My Heart." "Sabi ko, 'Direk, ang dami nating big stars baka naman pwedeng lumabas din dito si Sir Chief," she added. "Kasi fan ako ng 'Be Careful With My Heart.' Kapag nasa bahay ako nanonood ako talaga at alam ko talaga at nai-in love ako sa karakter nilang dalawa ni Jodi," she said, referring to the series' female lead star Jodi Sta. Maria. Aside from Yap, Santos also thanked actress Marian Rivera and Kapamilya actor Piolo Pascual for appearing in "Ekstra." "Thank you sa lahat ng mga nakasama pero a very, very special thanks kay Piolo Pascual na anak ko sa 'Dekada '70,'" she said. On Thursday, Santos personally received her best actress trophy from the 2013 Cinemalaya for her performance in "Ekstra" since she couldn't attend the awards night last Sunday because of a prior commitment.

Recto wants to produce movie with wife Vilma

MANILA – Senate President Pro Tempore Ralph Recto is throwing his full support to his wife, veteran actress and Batangas Governor Vilma Santos, whose first independent film “Ekstra” is part of this year’s Cinemalaya Film Festival. A self-confessed fan of his wife, Recto said it is a great joy to see Santos on the big screen anew years after she starred in a movie. Recto is hoping his wife would make more movies once she retires from politics. “I wish she makes more movies, maybe one or two a year kung kaya ng katawan niya and schedule niya. Later on when she retires from politics, I’m sure she will be making more movies,” he said. Asked if he’s willing to do a cameo role in Santos’ future projects, he said: “Sa bahay naman namin, ako na ang extra sa bahay eh. Puro sikat ang nasa bahay namin. Si Vilma, si Lucky. Pantay lang kami sa sikat ni Ryan. Hindi tayo artista.” But Recto said he will support his wife’s plan to produce a movie someday. “I look forward to helping her produce a movie, also in the future. I look forward that maybe, in the future, to write or maybe to produce, or maybe help her direct. Maybe later on, who knows?” he said. Recto said they just have to play things by ear since Santos is already is her last term as governor. “It will happen. Maybe sooner than later [she will retire from politics]. It’s her last term as governor. Depende kung ano ang mangyayari. Hindi niya iniisip [ang higher office], hindi niya pinaplano. Hindi namin pinag-uusapan,” he said. In a previous interview, Santos said she is not yet thinking about running for higher office in the 2016 elections. "Three years pa akong magta-trabaho as governor. I am not even dreaming to become the vice president," Santos-Recto said in an interview on ANC's "Headstart" hosted by Karen Davila. "Ang third term ko mag-uumpisa pa lang sa July 1st, at bago ko isipin 'yan ay iisipin ko muna kung paano ako ga-graduate nang maganda, itong last term ko sa Batangas," she said, adding that her target is to make Batangas one of the top three provinces, "if not number one."

Vilma elated with good reception of 'Ekstra'

MANILA – Veteran actress Vilma Santos could not hide her happiness after her first independent film, “Ekstra,” earned a long round of applause from the audience following its premiere screening at the Cultural center of the Philippines on Sunday. In an interview with ABS-CBN News, Santos said the immediate viewers’ reception made all her hard work worth it. “Doon ko na-realize na lahat ng pagod, lahat ng kaba, nawala lahat. The mere fact na ginawa mo lang iyon para sa a little contribution sa art at mapatunayan ko na hindi lahat, kapag sinabing artista, kailangan bayaran, hindi eh. Palagay ko 'yung reception kanina, iyon na ang pinakabayad namin,” she said. Santos said she is hoping that people will watch her movie, which tells the story of a person who makes a living from playing bit roles. “Sana panoorin niyo. This is something different. First time na talagang extra po ako. Modesty aside, talagang bida naman ako the whole time. Pero this time, extra talaga. Maramdaman niyo naman ang buhay ng isang extra, dahil ang isang pelikula hindi mabubuo ng walang extra,” she said. After doing “Ekstra,” Santos said she would not think twice of doing another independent film again in the future. “I hope so, I hope I can find time. I even hope I can produce one. It’s just that I need to find time kasi the priority is Batangas. This is my last term. But I’m looking forward if everything will be smooth in Batangas, maybe I can do another one or produce another one,” she said. Among those who attended the premiere screening of her movie were Senator Ralph Recto, sons Ryan Christian Recto and Luis Manzano, and actress Jennylyn Mercado. Read a review of "Ekstra" here.

Why Vilma Santos agreed to playing 'extra'

MANILA, Philippines -- Vilma Santos, who is dubbed Philippine cinema's "Star for All Seasons," considers her most deglamorized role yet as a tribute to the film "extras" she has worked with throughout her 50-year career. In "Ekstra: The Bit Player," the 59-year-old actress plays Loida Malabanan, a professional TV series and film bit-player who opts to withstand harsh conditions to fulfill her passion. The Jeffrey Jeturian-directed project is an entry to the 2013 Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival, and marks Santos' first-ever starring role in an independent film. "Imagine, sa tagal-tagal ko sa pelikula, lagi akong bida. Ngayon naman gagampanan ko 'yung role ng isang extra na alam naman nating lahat na ang isang pelikula, hindi mabubuo nang walang extra, so ako ngayon ang hahanga sa mga artista," the showbiz veteran told ABS-CBN News. Santos, who has starred in some 220 films, said "Ekstra" will touch on the unfair treatment of real-life bit-players, which she recalled to have witnessed herself while on the set of one of her past movies. "Malaking bagay sa akin na ako naman ang gaganap sa kanila. Alam naman nating lahat na kung minsan pag sinabing extra...
