MANILA – For the first time, actress Cristine Reyes openly spoke about her relationship with actor Derek Ramsay, which only became official last August 28.
At the sidelines of the Hero Ko charity basketball game on Sunday, Reyes related to ABS-CBN News how her friendship with Ramsay evolved into something special.
Reyes said the awkwardness began after she and Ramsay went out several times together to shop for groceries.
“Kinausap niya ako. Sabi niya, ‘Ano ito? What’s happening?’ Sabi ko, ‘I don’t know, I’m just waiting for you to ask me kung ano ang nangyayari kasi parang hindi na normal na ginagawa ito ng magkaibigan,'’’ Reyes said.
The actress said she did not expect Ramsay’s reply.
“Kinilig ako. He said na he’s in love daw with me. He just didn’t know for two years. I think I feel the same way. Hindi rin ako aware na may ganung feeling. Hindi naman namin ina-assume, basta sobra lang ang pag-aalaga namin sa isa’t isa pero ang tingin namin magkaibigan lang,” she said.
Reyes said she was at a loss for words at that exact moment because she thought such things only happen in movies.
“Hindi ako makasalita kais parang hindi ko ma-imagine na umaamin siya sa akin ng ganun kasi magkaibigan kami. Lagi ko siyang inaasar, kinukulit. Ganun din siya sa akin. Tatawagan niya ako kung gusto niya lang mambwisit tapos all of a sudden, [sasabihin niya] I’m in love?” she said.
Up to now, Reyes admitted that she still feels awkward whenever she and Ramsay would hold hands.
“Kaming dalawa naman aminado kami sa isa’t isa na dalawang taon kaming magkaibigan and alam namin talagang genuine 'yung friendship namin. Nandiyan siya, I have his back. Nandiyan din ako. It’s really, really awkward in a good way. Hindi naming in-expect pero ramdam naming masaya kami,” she said.
Just like Ramsay, Reyes said she ate her words when she entered into a relationship with the actor because she had said she wants to focus on her career first.
Mom’s, Rayver’s approval
Meanwhile, Reyes said she feels relieved that her mother and former boyfriend Rayver Cruz are both happy for her new relationship.
“Aware naman si Rayver na talagang aalagaan ako ni Derek. Kaibigan namin si Derek, dumadalaw kami before sa bahay nila. Walang ilangan,” she said.
She added: “Two nights ago, nag-dinner kami ng sister ko. Sumunod si Rayver doon so napag-usapan namin the whole thing. Which is good kasi sobrang healthy [ng relationship namin] ni Rayver. Kung ano ang relasyon namin, walang nagbago. It’s just that hindi na kami.”
As for her mom, Reyes said it is very important for her that she has her mom’s blessings with regard to her relationship.
“Natutuwa ako kasi 'yung mommy ko, masaya para sa akin. Ito ang kauna-unahang relasyon na parang lahat ng tao positive, lahat happy. Ito 'yung first time na parang lahat kino-congratulate ako. Masaya,” she said.
Asked how serious she is in this relationship, Reyes said: “Hindi ako pumapasok sa isang relasyon na walang patutunguhan. Gusto ko pag pumasok ako sa relasyon na iyon, iniisip ko na 'yung future ko with sa taong iyon. Hindi ako papasok sa isang relasyon kasi gusto ko lang magkaroon ng boyfriend.”
Reyes said it is an important factor that they have a “genuine friendship” which provides a strong foundation for their relationship.
