Why ABS-CBN shelved Julia Barretto's 'Cofradia'

Young actress thrilled over new project 'Mira Bella' MANILA -- For the first time, young actress Julia Barretto has directly addressed the reason behind the cancellation of her debut series "Cofradia." Speaking with reporters during a press conference for her new product endorsement early this week, the 16-year-old actress explained that the series' storyline drew criticisms for alleged racism. "Madami po kasing nagreklamo about racism, and ABS-CBN and Dreamscape (Entertainment Television), they really listen sa audience, sa viewers and everybody," Barretto said. At the time it was unveiled in May, "Cofradia" was introduced as a series based on the Dominador Ad Castillo novel of the same title, which had film adaptations in 1953 and 1973. The story centers on Cofradia, a young woman who is afraid to fall in love because of her dark complexion. With the help of a magic candle, she eventually transforms into a beautiful lady. In July, a press conference was held announcing Barretto would instead star in the lead role of a new, original series titled "Mira Bella." During the same event, Dreamscape's AdProm Head, Biboy Arboleda, explained that "Cofradia" was indeed shelved as it risked negatively affecting Barretto's launching vehicle as leading lady. "They decided to pursue, they decided na gawin nalang 'Mira Bella' with an original story na dapat abangan, dahil sobrang ganda ng kwento niya," Barretto told reporters early this week. "Wala [akong panghihinayang]. I mean, it's equally exciting, equally beautiful, sobrang ganda. I'm so excited na po ako na mapanood ninyo. Ang ganda ng storya," she added. Also billed as a fantaserye, "Mira Bella" will see its title character struggle to overcome a curse. Joining Barretto in the series as her leading men are Diego Loyzaga and Kiko Estrada. Directed by Erick Salud ("Aryana," "May Isang Pangarap") and Jerome Pobocan ("Mara Clara," "May Bukas Pa"), the series also stars Liza Soberano, Gloria Diaz, Mylene Dizon, Pokwang and John Lapus. Its target airing date has yet to be announced.

Julia Barretto says 'Mira Bella' better than 'Confradia'

MANILA – Young actress Julia Barretto does not mind that “Confradia” got shelved because she believes her new project is even better. “Ako okay lang because ‘Mira Bella’ is equally exciting, equally beautiful and even better. Actually, I would like to share with you that this story is talagang pampamilya with romance para sa age ninyo and para sa age ko rin,” she told ABS-CBN News. Barretto, who will play the title role in the upcoming series, said she trusts that the ABS-CBN management knows what’s best for her career. “I really trust Dreamscape, Star Magic, ABS-CBN and they want the best for me and for Diego (Loyzaga) and Kiko (Diaz-Estrada). Whatever they think is going to be good for everyone, doon kami,” she said. Asked whether she feels relieved since her new show isn’t a remake anymore, the 16-year-old actress said: “Hindi naman sa hindi na maco-compare. I’m very, very happy na basta the opportunity is still there, ang ganda ng project.” Saying her new show is “very beautiful and fairytale-like,” Barretto said she is also honored to be working with Loyzaga and Diaz-Estrada, who are also from showbiz families like her. Loyzaga is the son of Teresa Loyzaga and Cesar Montano, while Diaz-Estrada is the grandson of the late actor Pacquito Diaz. “Mas mabuti sa akin na you get to work with a lot of actors and new people kasi doon mag-e-expand ang knowledge mo. There are both good guys and good actors. I’m beyond excited to work with them,” Barretto said.

Julia Barretto regrets estrangement from Tita Claudine

MANILA -- As she gears up for her debut as a dramatic actress, Julia Barretto said she regrets not being able to communicate with her aunt, Claudine, whose career in showbiz spans over two decades. Julia Barretto with aunt Claudine in a photo taken in 2012. Photo courtesy of Julia's Instagram page The 16-year-old Julia will be featured for the first time in an episode of the long-running drama anthology "Maalaala Mo Kaya" on Saturday, following her launch as a member of Star Magic Circle 2013 early this year. The episode, which Julia described to be "heavy drama," is seen as a stepping stone for the young actress as she prepares for the Kapamilya series "Cofradia," wherein she will take on the title role. Speaking to ABS-CBN News at the sidelines of the recent Mega Pinoy Pride Ball 2013, Julia said she had wanted to approach her aunts to seek their advice on acting. The daughter of former actress Marjorie Barretto and comedian Dennis Padilla, Julia is niece to Claudine and Gretchen, who are both also actresses. "Especially with what's going on right now, I wasn't able to get advice from my titas, but I wish was able to," the young actress said, referring to the controversial feud among members of the Barretto clan, with alliances between her mom and aunt Gretchen on one side, and her aunt Claudine and her grandparents on the other. Asked who among her relatives she has been able to talk to since the feud went public, Julia said, "Of course my Tita Gretchen, yes, but Tita Claudine, no. But one day I know they're all going to be okay again, and I'll be able to ask questions about acting." Nonetheless, Julia feels relieved that the tension between both camps has eased, "It's just that hindi pa sila nakaka-reconcile." She added that her mom, who also made headlines when sensitive photos of her circulated online amid their family feud, has managed to "show me that life goes on." "Kasi right now she also tells me that wala na rin, it's done. May mga bagong intriga narin naman na papasok, so it's not something to dwell on so much," Julia said. Heavy drama in 'MMK' Among the "intrigues" that the young actress has addressed time and again is her ties with a clan of celebrities, which considerably boosted her familiarity with the public. With her "Maalaala Mo Kaya" debut, Julia said she hopes to accomplish being set apart from her mom and aunts, and being known for her own talent. "I want to prove to them that I can also act like my titas and that I got into showbiz not just because of my last name, but because there's something that I can prove to them -- why I deserve to be in show business," she said. Julia is particularly thrilled to share the result of what she considers to be the most difficult scene to film in her "Maalaala Mo Kaya" episode. "I can't tell so much about it, but I was so nervous to do it because it is a big scene and that's where the problem ends. So it's a very heavy scene and it had to look very real, so I had to go deep into my life and make hugot there," she said. Asked where she drew her emotions for the pivotal scene, the young actress said, "I think you go back to an important event in your life that was painful to you in the past. I think you go back to it and try to feel the pain again, so you can feel it again and malabas mo sa acting." Joining Barretto in the cast of the June 15 episode of "Maalaala Mo Kaya" are Ara Mina, James Blanco, Jacob Dionisio, Tommy Abuel, Manuel Chua, Kristoff Meneses, Marikit Morales and Yda Yaneza. Written by Mark Angos with research by Akeep del Rosario, the episode is directed by Dado Lumibao.

Unlike Julia, Claudia Barretto not keen on showbiz

Claudia unfazed by controversies surrounding their family MANILA – Just like her older sisters Dani and Julia, Claudia Barretto remains unfazed that their family is now the talk of the town because of the controversies her motheir Marjorie and aunts Claudine and Gretchen are currently embroiled in. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion so we’ll just respect that.” According to Claudia, she also draws strength from her mom, who has not shown any signs of weakness since her sexy photos made the rounds online. “I’m really proud of my mom, she’s such a strong woman. She’s the one I look up to,” she said. Meanwhile, the 13-year-old Barretto said she does not have concrete plans of joining show business unlike Julia. “Not yet now because I think I should prioritize studies talaga. Julia wants to be 'positive light' amid Barretto feud

MANILA – Teen actress Julia Baretto refuses to get affected by rumors that her entry to show business sparked the feud within the Barretto family. The tiff among the Barretto family members stemmed partly from comments on the image-sharing service Instagram, supposedly made by Gretchen, saying that her sister Claudine is not happy that their niece, Julia, is starting to make a name for herself in showbiz. Julia, the second daughter of Marjorie, was recently introduced as an artist of Star Magic, the ABS-CBN talent management firm that launched Claudine to stardom until her transfer to another network in 2009. In an interview with ABS-CBN News on Wednesday, Julia said she was not even aware that such controversial comments were made on Instagram. “I wasn’t even aware of that pero hindi ko masyado tine-take in iyon. I don’t think that’s it. As of now, I really don’t want to comment on the feud or the news that’s going around,” she said. While their family has been divided since her grandmother Inday came out with a statement disowning Gretchen while defending Claudine, Julia insisted that they are not taking sides in this issue. “I love my family. I don’t want to speak ill sa kahit kanino. I miss them all. We’ve all been busy, I’ve been busy rin kasi I’ve working na almost every day. I miss all of them,” she said. With all the intrigues surrounding their family, Julia said she wants to focus on her career all the more that and be the “positive light” in their family. “Hearing these things, parang hindi ako masyadong naapektuhan kasi parang nasanay na rin ako. I just entered tapos ito na ang mga nangyayari pero I have to strong because I’m gonna go through much more. The more I want to be the positive light,” she said.

Julian Estrada admits he wants Julia Barretto to be his leading lady someday

As part of Star Magic Circle 2013, Julian Estrada, son of senator Jinggoy Estrada and grandson of former president Erap Estrada, said he is not at the point where he would even consider a career in politics after finishing his studies. Julian is an incoming junior high school student at the OB Montessori in Greenhills, San Juan. “As of now, hindi ko pa iniisip yung sa pulitika kasi gusto ko muna mag-concentrate sa showbiz. Naghintay ako ng matagal kaya ngayon gusto ko ito na,” he admitted. Before Star Magic Circle, Julian said he had a stint in his dad's movie Katas ng Saudi. Julian said he will always be there to support his family during their campaign period. The soft-spoken Estrada said he even got advice from his lolo Erap before he formally joined showbiz. “He told me just to be humble and matuto makihalubilo,” he said. Because of his now busy schedule, Julian said he has not had time to talk to his dad Jinggoy about show business. “Maaga kasi ako natutulog, 7:30 am pasok ko sa school so pag 6am nagigising na ako,” he told Push.com.ph. Julian said his parents did not disapprove when he first told them about his showbiz aspirations. “Basta habang pumapasa sa grades, wala akong problema sa kanila. Basta passing grade na mataas (laughs). Tamang-tama ni-launch kami sa Star Magic Circle nung last week ko na sa school tapos vacation na namin ngayon kaya okay lang yung timing,” he explained. Apart from attending acting workshops, the 17-year-old newbie said he has always dreamed of becoming a singer. “Wala pang projects ngayon pero sana meron soon. Sa singing I want to do R&B siguro or rock. Internationally, I like the band Paramore because I like their style,” he said. At 5'7”, he said he also enjoys playing basketball when he has time for sports. When asked who he would choose to be his leading lady if he were ever given the chance, Julian didn’t hesitate to admit it would have to be his Star Magic Circle batchmate and Gretchen Barretto's niece Julia. “Kasi we're close friends naman. Last year lang kami nagkakilala nung Star Magic Ball. Kahit sino naman basta ba may chemistry kami para mas ma-feel yung roles namin,” he admitted. And although it is rumored that he is already courting the young actress, Julian said it is too early to assume that and that they have become real close because of they have been spending more time together in workshops and events for Star Magic Circle. “We're just close friends,” he clarified.

Julia Barretto can surpass Claudine, says dad

MANILA, Philippines -- The father of Julia Barretto, comedian Dennis Padilla, is confident that the young actress can surpass the achievements of her aunt Claudine, who is seen as one of the most successful personalities of local showbiz. "Noon pa naman, naniniwala na ako diyan," Padilla said of his daughter, as quoted by entertainment news site Philippine Entertainment Portal. "Malalim siya sa pag-arte, malalim siya mag-isip, so sigurado ako na magiging magaling na actress siya. At sigurado akong sisikat siya, ang galing eh," he said. The 16-year-old Julia was recently launched as one of the members of Star Magic Circle 2013, a group of young artists groomed for stardom by ABS-CBN's talent management firm. Padilla said his daughter with former actress Marjorie Barretto can easily do both comedy and drama -- the former he credits to his family of comedians, and the latter, to the Barretto clan. "So pag pinag-drama mo si Julia, siguradong may ibubuga. Pag pinag-comedy, may ibubuga rin 'yun. "And I’m sure, maaaring siya ang susunod na Claudine Barretto ng ABS-CBN or higit pa," Padilla said. Aside from Claudine, Julia is also a niece to actress Gretchen Barretto, who recently appeared in the ABS-CBN series "Princess and I" and "Juan dela Cruz." In an earlier interview, Julia said she hopes to follow in the footsteps of Claudine. Claudine, whose career now spans over 20 years, was among the first "discoveries" of Star Magic, and went on to become arguably the most popular and visible actress of her generation during her peak. Her TV series "Mula sa Puso" (1997) and "Marina" (2004), among others, became the most watched programs on local television during its respective run. The 33-year-old actress' film portrayals also earned her several trophies from award-giving bodies. With a promising showbiz career ahead of his daughter, Padilla said he is certain Julia will remain humble despite her growing popularity. "I’m proud and nakikita ko na kahit sumikat 'yung bata, mababa 'yung loob and humble naman si Julia," he said.

Julia Barretto reacts to Claudine-Gretchen 'feud

MANILA, Philippines -- Julia Barretto said she is unaffected by rumors of a brewing feud involving her mother Marjorie and aunts Claudine and Gretchen. Julia Barretto. Photo taken from Barretto's official Facebook page The 16-year-old was asked on the matter at the sidelines of the premiere night of the film "Coming Soon" on Tuesday. "Siguro kung may makaka-answer niyan, it's my titas and my mom themselves. I'm not in the right position," Julia told reporters. Last Saturday, entertainment reporter Ogie Diaz said he hopes that a rumored tiff between Marjorie and Gretchen, and their youngest sister Claudine will be ironed out soon. Diaz, during a live telecast of "Showbiz Inside Report," brought up comments allegedly made by Gretchen in a post on the image-sharing service Instagram, which supposedly criticized her Claudine. The alleged comments on Instagram of both Gretchen and Marjorie, which supposedly addressed their youngest sister, have since been deleted. "I'm not affected, kasi for me marami na akong narinig na rumors, marami na kaming napagdaanan as a family, and we surpassed them all, and we're okay now," Julia said of the rumored feud. She added: "Whatever trial may come our way, for sure kaya naming lagpasan 'yon. We have to stay positive, life is too short!" Last year, Claudine and Gretchen reportedly reconciled after years of estrangement, which stemmed from a feud among their family members and in-laws. Career launch Considered "showbiz royalty" thanks to her celebrity mom and aunts, Julia was launched early this year as a member of Star Magic Circle 2013, a group of young artists groomed for stardom by the talent management firm of ABS-CBN. Claudine, whose career now spans over 20 years, was among the first "discoveries" of Star Magic, and went on to become arguably the most popular and visible actress of her generation at her peak. I don't want to think about the disadvantage." "There may be pressure, pero I will use this as an advantage para galingan kong umarte, so 'yun," she said. Julia, who has cited Claudine's career path as her "ideal" showbiz route, said she is thrilled to finally star in a "teleserye" of her own. "Hopefully this year I can be able to act na, so that mapakita ko rin 'yung matagal ko nang gustong gawin, which is to act. I'm very excited. Sana this year sana magka-show na talaga," she said.

Julia Barretto not yet ready for relationship

In her guesting on morning show "KrisTV," the pretty 16-year-old stressed that her priority now is her career. "It's really my decision also na I don't want to have a relationship muna. Kasi I'm starting again and I really want to focus on my career, sa career muna," Barretto said.
