MANILA, Philippines -- The father of Julia Barretto, comedian Dennis Padilla, is confident that the young actress can surpass the achievements of her aunt Claudine, who is seen as one of the most successful personalities of local showbiz.
"Noon pa naman, naniniwala na ako diyan," Padilla said of his daughter, as quoted by entertainment news site Philippine Entertainment Portal.
"Malalim siya sa pag-arte, malalim siya mag-isip, so sigurado ako na magiging magaling na actress siya. At sigurado akong sisikat siya, ang galing eh," he said.
The 16-year-old Julia was recently launched as one of the members of Star Magic Circle 2013, a group of young artists groomed for stardom by ABS-CBN's talent management firm.
Padilla said his daughter with former actress Marjorie Barretto can easily do both comedy and drama -- the former he credits to his family of comedians, and the latter, to the Barretto clan.
"So pag pinag-drama mo si Julia, siguradong may ibubuga. Pag pinag-comedy, may ibubuga rin 'yun.
"And I’m sure, maaaring siya ang susunod na Claudine Barretto ng ABS-CBN or higit pa," Padilla said.
Aside from Claudine, Julia is also a niece to actress Gretchen Barretto, who recently appeared in the ABS-CBN series "Princess and I" and "Juan dela Cruz."
In an earlier interview, Julia said she hopes to follow in the footsteps of Claudine.
Claudine, whose career now spans over 20 years, was among the first "discoveries" of Star Magic, and went on to become arguably the most popular and visible actress of her generation during her peak.
Her TV series "Mula sa Puso" (1997) and "Marina" (2004), among others, became the most watched programs on local television during its respective run. The 33-year-old actress' film portrayals also earned her several trophies from award-giving bodies.
With a promising showbiz career ahead of his daughter, Padilla said he is certain Julia will remain humble despite her growing popularity.
"I’m proud and nakikita ko na kahit sumikat 'yung bata, mababa 'yung loob and humble naman si Julia," he said.
