"Our role as the chart of record is to set the rules, and hopefully even raise the level of play. BET kicks off live music festival with Beyonce ahead of awards

LOS ANGELES - Singer Beyonce will kick off the first BET three-day music festival on Friday, ahead of the BET awards this weekend, as the network hopes to attract more fans to music and comedy by black artists. The annual BET awards, now in its 13th year, celebrate black musicians, actors and athletes across a variety of categories spanning music, film and sport. It is televised on the cable TV network BET, Black Entertainment Television, part of Viacom Inc. The BET Experience is the first weekend music festival to be hosted by a television network, BET said in a statement. Stephen Hill, president of music programming and special events at BET Networks, said the music festival aims to give fans a more inclusive experience. "What we noticed through the years was that people would come out. They had tickets to the awards and they'd come for the weekend ... and people came just to be in the atmosphere of the awards, even if they didn't have tickets," Hill said. Male artists lead this year's BET awards nominees with R&B singer Drake landing 12 nominations, followed by rappers Kendrick Lamar and 2 Chainz with eight nominations each, and rapper A$AP Rocky with five. Beyoncé means the world to her father, Mathew Knowles. So insists Knowles himself in a defamation lawsuit filed against London's Sun tabloid, which, he claims in a statement released to E! News, interviewed him and then "knowingly and maliciously misrepresented [his] relationship with his daughter, Beyoncé, and with his granddaughter," Blue Ivy Carter. In the article in question, dated March 24, 2013, The Sun teases the story with the sub-headlines "Former manager talks about family rift for the first time" and "Mathew Knowles has reportedly not yet met Blue Ivy." The story also states: "Although he insists the decision to go their separate ways was mutual, Mathew, 61, is hurt that Beyoncé has cut him out of her life." In his statement, Knowles calls foul on those three particular assertions. "My daughters and my family mean the world to me," he said. "The barrage of repeated falsehoods spawned by the British Sun's defamatory article has been exhausting and personally damaging to me. No matter how many papers it sells or web hits it generates, The Sun, like any newspaper, needs to maintain a basic level of journalistic integrity. The Sun crossed the line when it went after my family. The Sun needs to be held responsible for its lies in a court of law. This happens too often to too many people, and it is simply unfair." Meanwhile, the paper also quotes Knowles in the article as saying, "'Normally I hate to talk about anything personal, but it would be a lie if I did not say it has been difficult. It was hard for me to let her go—it was hard for both of us to let each other go. And let's be clear on that. She didn't let me go, we both let each other go. That's a big difference." Many details of the trip are sketchy, but we know that Beyoncé wore a lot of prints; had her hair piled on her head; posed for photos with Cuban kids; and was greeted by a mob of adoring fans that had to be watched closely by local cops. The U.S. restricts many forms of American travel to Cuba. But not as much as it used to. There's a good chance that the Carter visit was on the up-and-up. In fact, there are even travel agencies out there, legit ones, that sell leisure packages. (Got $3,000 handy? You can spend nine days in Cuba and even see an "authentic Rumba block party.") The catch? The trip has to fall into a serious-sounding category that doesn't make Uncle Sam nervous: a "cultural exchange," a contribution to "humanitarian efforts" for less-fortunate people in Cuba, a "person-to-person" outreach effort with everyday Havana folk, that kind of thing. No schmoozing with uppity-ups in the Cuban government, no shopping sprees that involve importing millions of dollars in Cuban cigars. Just eating out at restaurants and rubbing shoulders with locals, or, in Beyoncé's case, fans. Exactly what kind of category was used to get Bey and Jay over to Cuba? Not clear at this hour. A local Cuban media outlet called it a "tourist trip." But given that these folks are, at their core, artists, would a "cultural exchange" visit surprise you?
