Budding actress Jasmine Curtis is slowly stepping out of the shadow of her older sister, and Anne Curtis couldn’t be any happier about it. According to Anne, during an interview for her upcoming E! News Asia Special held at The HyvE on September 25, her younger sister “deserves in her own right to make a name for herself.”
Just last month, Jasmine bagged the Best Supporting Actress award in the New Breed category in this year’s Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival for her film Transit. After that, she headlined in Puti, the Mike Alcazaren-helmed indie which became one of the films included in the first CineFilipino Film Festival.
Anne noted that for Jasmine to be recognized for her first-ever film right away was an “amazing achievement” already. What rather lent a more “legit” feel to her feat, Anne says, was the fact that it came from no less than the highly-acclaimed local award-giving body, Cinemalaya. “I’m so proud of her that she keeps on striving to do her best,” Anne happily blurted out.
Just when Anne thought that she couldn’t be any more proud than she already is about her baby sister, a week ago, the Paul Soriano-produced Transit was chosen to be the Philippine bet for the Foreign Language Film category of the 86th Academy Awards.
“The mere fact that it’s going to be the Philippine bet for the Oscars, I think that’s really major so all we have to do is pray na sana ma-nominate. Sana talaga,” the It’s Showtime host told the press.
It seems that sibling rivalry is really nonexistent in the AnneBisyosa star’s dictionary as she explained that she has always wanted her younger to not be tagged as her younger sister alone.
With the recent happenings in Jasmine’s career, it appears that Anne might just get her wish a little sooner. Anne said she is also proud that her baby sister is thriving in an industry that she herself has admittedly yet to explore. “… Teritoryo yan na hindi ko pa natatapakan eh, ‘yung indie scene. Parang na-miss out ko ‘yung chance ko na ‘yun. Pero si Jasmine, she’s excelling so much in that industry and it makes me so proud,” the 28-year-old star noted.
Speaking of independent films, a lot of mainstream stars were able to successfully cross into the indie scene, has she no plans to follow suit? “Well I guess it’s really about the right script, ‘di ba? Kung ano ‘yung dadating.Kung dadating eh ‘di sige, kung bagay naman at kung kaya ko naman, why not ‘di ba? Pero so far mukhang nakatali pa rin ako sa mainstream movies,” the star said.
Apart from her noontime show, Anne is currently busy working with her reunion film with Sam Milby titled The Gifted. While she still cannot divulge much details about hew new film, Anne gave a little teaser and said that the Chris Martinez-helmed flick is under the “dark comedy” genre.
Since dark comedy is generally a film that not too many Filipinos are familiar with, Anne offered a little explanation: “May slapstick comedy kasi eh I would say ‘yun ‘yung very movie ko with Ms. Ai Ai [delas Alas] ‘yung Ang Cute ng Ina Mo. Eto, serious siya pero nakakatawa siya, ‘yung hindi mo maintindihan kung nakakatawa siya kasi serious ‘yung tao eh. Pero nakakatawa kasi ‘yung eksena mismo.”
Considering that her last two films namely: A Secret Affair and No Other Woman and her last soap Kailangan Ko’y Ikaw were all heavy dramas, Anne described her current project as “a breath of fresh air.”
Since it’s a new thing for her, Anne confessed that she’s making every effort to prepare and be able to deliver on this film. “Super basa ng script tapos inaaral ko. Tapos ‘yung character kasi is medyo smart na iba. So pinag-aaralan ko talaga. I have to do my best especially with Direk Chris Martinez,” quipped the first Pinay to get an autobiographical feature on E! News Asia.
