Carlo J. Caparas wanted for tax evasion

MANILA, Philippines -- A warrant of arrest has been issued against comicbook artist and film director Carlo J. Caparas for a tax evasion case filed against him by the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR). The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) is now looking for Caparas, following the issuance of the arrest warrant by the Quezon City Court of Tax Appeals in June. The preliminary investigation of the court shows that Caparas failed to file his value-added tax (VAT). "We will treat this [case] like any other. We will serve the warrant. Pwede siyang sumuko na lang, o pwede rin na magbayad na lang siya ng piyansa," NBI director Nonnatus Rojas said on Wednesday, referring to Caparas. According to BIR Commissioner Kim Henares, aside from not filing his VAT, Caparas also failed to pay the right amount of tax. "Ang sabi nila nakapag-file sila. Pero sa records namin, lumalabas, hindi. Baka mag-file kami ng criminal case for that," Henares said. Caparas declined when sought for comment by ABS-CBN News. According to the film director's staff, although he is currently in the province, he is not in hiding. They said Caparas is set to return to Manila to face the case. -- Report from Niko Baua, ABS-CBN News
