MANILA – Singer and songwriter Yeng Constantino admitted she once had a cold relationship with her mother, even harboring "hatred" against the latter.
"Nagkaroon ako ng parang hatred sa nanay ko. Parang feeling ko 'di niya ako mahal at ‘yung papa ko lang nababanggit ko sa interviews," Constantino said in an interview aired on "Showbiz Inside Report."
At one point, Constantino said even a showbiz reporter thought that her mother already passed away, since she rarely mentions the latter in her interviews.
She said her cold treatment towards her mother lasted for some time, until a particular inspirational talk by a church pastor made her realize that her mother loves her.
"One time nag-church ako, parang may nasabi ang pastor na sobrang nag-strike sa puso ko. Parang nag-rewind ang mga mabubuting ginagawa ng nanay ko para sa akin," she said.
"Magkaiba lang sila ni papa, but that doesn't mean na hindi niya ako mahal. Niyakap ko lang siya and I said sorry, I'm really sorry, I'm sorry na nag-kulang ko. I'm sorry na 'di ko nakita kung gaano niya ako kamahal. I'm sorry na 'di ko siya minahal equally katulad ng pagmamahal ko sa tatay ko," she added.
In the same interview, Constantino also shared her life before her rise as one of the country's most sought-after singer and songwriter, showing a picture of an artist who never gives up in the face of numerous rejections.
Constantino said that before she became the Grand Star Dreamer in the defunct ABS-CBN reality singing show "Pinoy Dream Academy" in 2006, she had failed many times to get the attention of talent scouts in various singing competitions.
She said she tried to audition for talent contests such as "Star in a Million" and "Star Circle Quest" but failed to capture the interests of the judges.
Constantino recently received an honorary licentiate diploma from the Academy of Rock Singapore, and was named its ambassadress.
She also recently released her latest album, "Metamorphosis."
