Billy Ray Cyrus Talks Miley Cyrus' Twerking & VMA Controversy: "That's Still My Miley"

Billy Ray Cyrus, Piers Morgan

Miley Cyrus may be the center of a lot of controversy (especially lately), but she's still Billy Ray Cyrus' little girl. The pop star's dad appeared on Piers Morgan Tonight Thursday and discussed his thoughts on his daughter becoming the Twerking Queen, and that racy performance at the VMAs that caused a lot of buzz. However, when Piers Morgan first brought up the issue—adding that, as a father, he wouldn't be too pleased if his daughter "turned to twerking"—Billy Ray seemed to divert from the question a bit. "It gets even stranger when that little girl becomes a young lady," he said, and mentioned that "the shock factor is tremendously higher than it used to be." But what it came down to, in Billy Ray's eyes, is Miley stripping herself from her Hannah Montana image and evolving as an artist. "I'm her daddy. I come for that school of as a singer-songwriter, as a musician, that it starts with a song. And it's that magic moment when a song finds the right artist, the right singer, and it becomes a synchronicity of that moment in time," Cyrus explained. "Miley harnessed into something very special. She's just Miley. She's an artist, she's real. I think that's what's happened over the years, Miley has been reinventing her sound. She's evolving as an artist herself. I think that it's all of what everyone is calling controversy now. That's still my Miley." As for that performance at the MTV VMAs, Cyrus simply stated, "Miley again, you know, I think she could've went out and sang the song in a flannel shirt and a pair of jeans, and it would have still been just as strong. Would we have been here talking about it? No way."

Billy Ray Cyrus Cancels on Piers Morgan Live: He's Not Quite Ready to Explain Miley, Piers Joke

Billy Ray Cyrus' first in-depth interview regarding his daughter's performance at the MTV Video Music Awards will have to wait. Miley Cyrus' dad ended up bailing on Piers Morgan Live tonight, late enough so that he was still included in the East Coast feed's show-opening tease about what was to come later in the telecast. Morgan did not announce the cancellation until there were about 15 minutes left. No official reason was given, but the host joked that the beleaguered dad probably just hadn't figured out what to say about Miley yet. "Billy Ray was supposed to be on the show tonight to explain his daughter's behavior, but..." "He's got some 'splainin' to do," interjected guest Morgan Spurlock, who directed One Direction: This Is Us and was chiming in on the twerking phenomenon and pop culture in general. "I'm not sure he's quite worked out what his explanation is yet," Morgan continued, "so we've decided to postpone it. We are going to get the first interview. I know he'w watching tonight, so, Billy Ray, good evening, and when you're ready, we will talk about this." Ray did comment briefly to Entertainment Tonight earlier today, saying that he will always be there for his daughter, no matter what. "Can't wait to see her when she gets home," said the country singer, who also costarred with Miley on Hannah Montana. "She's still my little girl and I'm still her dad regardless how this circus we call show business plays out. I love her unconditionally and that will never change."

Billy Ray Cyrus on Daughter Miley's Life in the Spotlight: "Fame Is a Very Dangerous Thing"

Miley Cyrus will always have a No. 1 fan in her dad. During an interview with E! News' Terrence Jenkins and Giuliana Rancic on Wednesday to promote his upcoming book Hillbilly Heart, Billy Ray Cyrus addressed his relationship with his famous daughter and the media attention devoted to her style and, of course, her wedding plans. "I like right now just being her daddy and her friend," he said. "I like where our relationship is at right now. I'm very proud of her." Miley can't help but make headlines, whether it be for chopping off and lightening her locks, for tweeting or for making people wonder if she and fiancé Liam Hemsworth will actually walk down the aisle. And through it all, Billy Ray says he has tried to handle it the best way he knows how, drawing from his own experience in the limelight. "There's two sides to the sword, and fame is a very dangerous thing. So you handle it with respect and caution, step by step, day by day," he said. "Knowing that, for me, I had a friend to talk to—he was called my dad—and that's what I try to be for Miley." Watch the clip to find out what Billy Ray said after Liam asked for Miley's hand in marriage!
